Bundle Up! Helping International Students Prepare for Winter!

Winter has arrived, and with it comes chilly temperatures that may surprise international students unfamiliar with colder climates. As a host family, you have an opportunity to help your student navigate the season with warmth and comfort by sharing practical tips and advice.

Gear Up for the Outdoors

Start by guiding your student in finding suitable winter gear. Recommend trusted brands or local stores where they can purchase essentials like:

  • Coats and jackets: Insulated, waterproof, and windproof options are ideal.
  • Boots: Encourage footwear with good traction and waterproof materials to prevent slips and keep feet dry.
  • Accessories: Hats, scarves, and touchscreen gloves are small but essential items to combat the cold.

Remind them that layering is the key to staying warm. A solid base layer like wool socks or thermal underwear is especially helpful in colder states.

Check the Forecast Together

Teaching your student how to check the weather forecast can help them prepare for varying conditions, from freezing rain to snowstorms. Show them how to interpret temperatures and wind chill factors to make informed clothing choices.

Create a Cozy Home Environment

While outside preparation is crucial, staying warm at home is equally important. Gently remind your student to layer up indoors instead of relying solely on the thermostat. Cozy clothing like hoodies, flannel pants, and warm socks or slippers can make all the difference.

Share Your Wisdom

This season is a new experience for many international students, and your guidance is invaluable. Take time to share your personal tips for staying warm and safe during winter. Simple gestures, like helping them choose winter essentials or sharing a warm drink together, can make the season memorable and foster a deeper connection.

By equipping your student with the knowledge and tools to handle winter, you’re not only helping them stay warm but also building their confidence to adapt to a new climate. With your support, they’ll embrace the season with comfort and ease!
