Getting to Know Your Student: Building Connection at the Start of the Year!

Whether you are welcoming your student back into your home or meeting them for the very first time, the beginning of the school year is a special opportunity to build connection. Each student brings with them unique experiences, perspectives, and interests, and creating space to discover these together sets the tone for a meaningful and successful year.

Start with simple conversations. Ask about their journey to your home, their favorite foods, or what they are most excited for this year. If they are returning, ask about their summer break and any new hobbies or interests they’ve developed. These questions show care and open doors for connection.

Notice changes and differences. Returning students may have grown and matured since last year, while new students are adjusting to a new home, school, and culture. Approach both with patience, curiosity, and an open heart.

Share about your home and community. Give your student a tour of the house, review family routines, and highlight community spots. Returning students will appreciate updates on anything that has changed since they were away, while new students will feel included and oriented in their new environment.

Create small traditions. A welcome dinner, a family outing, or even a favorite weekly activity helps both new and returning students feel at home. Traditions foster a sense of belonging and stability.

Keep communication open. Encourage your student to share how they are feeling as they settle in. Even returning students may experience adjustment stress, while new students may be navigating culture shock. Listening with empathy and responding with patience will make them feel supported.

By taking intentional steps to know your student—whether brand-new to your family or returning after a summer away—you are building the foundation for a year of trust, growth, and shared memories!
