Preparing for Student Arrivals: A Guide for Host Families This School Year!

As the new school year approaches, excitement is building—not just for students, but for host families too! Hosting an international student is a rewarding experience that brings cultural exchange, new perspectives, and lasting relationships into your home. Whether you’re a first-time host or a seasoned one, here are some helpful tips to make sure you’re prepared to welcome your student with confidence and care.

  1. Create a Welcoming Space

Your student will be arriving from a long journey, likely feeling tired, nervous, and excited. Prepare their room with essentials like clean bedding, a desk or study area, a lamp, and some welcome touches—a small gift, a local snack, or a handwritten note can go a long way in making them feel at home.

  1. Stock Up and Plan Ahead

Before arrival, consider asking about any food preferences or allergies. Stock your kitchen with a few familiar items if possible, but also introduce them to local favorites. It’s also helpful to plan a few simple meals for the first few days to help your student ease into the new routine.

  1. Get to Know Each Other

Remember, your student is navigating a new culture, language, and environment all at once. Take time to get to know their interests and background. Ask about their family, hobbies, and what they’re excited (or nervous) about. Clear and open communication from the beginning sets a strong foundation.

  1. Go Over the Basics

Help them settle in by reviewing household routines, school schedules, and transportation plans. Be clear about expectations around curfews, chores, screen time, and other household norms. These guidelines provide structure and help avoid misunderstandings.

  1. Prepare for Culture Shock

Homesickness and culture shock are normal parts of the adjustment process. Be patient and understanding as your student adapts. Encourage them to share how they’re feeling and let them know it’s okay to ask questions or make mistakes.

  1. Stay Connected with Cambridge Network

You’re never in this alone. Our team is here to support both you and your student throughout the year. Attend host orientations, keep in touch with your local coordinator, and reach out whenever you have questions or concerns.
