Bringing Culture and Students Together This Holiday Season!

At Cambridge Network, we understand that the holiday season can be a time of both excitement and homesickness for international students. While they’re eager to experience new traditions in the U.S., many also miss the familiar foods, celebrations, and customs of home. That’s why our teams work intentionally to create moments of cultural comfort and connection.

Recently, one of our Local Support Coordinators gathered students in her program for a holiday meal featuring dishes from their own cultures—a simple but meaningful way to help students feel grounded during a busy season. The photo captures students sharing food, stories, and laughter with their LSC, creating a warm sense of belonging that can make all the difference while studying abroad.

How Cambridge Creates These Moments

Across our programs, Cambridge Local Support Coordinators regularly host cultural gatherings, shared meals, and community activities that:

  • Honor students’ cultural identities
  • Ease feelings of homesickness
  • Encourage friendships among students
  • Support emotional well-being
  • Build a sense of community and belonging

These events reflect our commitment to supporting students holistically—academically, emotionally, and culturally.

How Host Families Can Create Similar Experiences at Home

You don’t need a large event to make a meaningful impact. Host families can recreate this type of connection right at home. Here are a few simple ideas inspired by our LSC’s gathering:

🍜 1. Share a Cultural Meal Together

Ask your student about their favorite dishes from home and try cooking one together—or even visit a local restaurant that serves their cuisine. The familiarity of certain flavors can be incredibly comforting.

🧡 2. Invite Them to Share a Tradition

Ask your student about their family’s holiday celebrations. A small gesture like displaying a cultural symbol, trying a recipe, or learning a greeting in their language shows deep respect.

🌍 3. Encourage Cultural Storytelling

Mealtimes are a great opportunity to ask about festivals, traditions, and memories from home. Students often appreciate the chance to share their world with their host family.

❄️ 4. Blend Traditions Together

Include your student in your holiday plans while also making space for their customs. Something as simple as adding one of their holiday foods to your table can create a beautiful cultural exchange.

🤝 5. Create Regular Connection Moments

It doesn’t need to be elaborate—shared meals, game nights, or small outings can help students feel part of the family, especially during long breaks.

A Takeaway for All of Us

The holiday season is about creating warmth, belonging, and community. Just as our Cambridge teams work to build these moments, host families play an essential role in helping students feel at home. When we honor a student’s culture while inviting them into our own, we create a supportive environment where they feel seen, valued, and celebrated.
